Betamethasone valerate is an active corticosteroid with topical anti-inflammatory activity.
Betaval® cream/ointment is indicated for the treatment of eczema in children and adults, including atopic and discoid eczemas, prurigo nodularis, psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis), neurodermatitis (including lichen simplex, lichen planus), seborrhoeic dermatitis, contact sensitivity reactions, and discoid lupus erythematosus.
A small quantity of Betaval® cream/ointment should be applied and rubbed gently onto the affected area 2 or 3 times daily until improvement occurs.
Children: Courses should be limited to five days.
Betamethasone valerate is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparation.
Burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria may be reported.
Avoid contact with the eyes. The treated skin area should not be bandaged or otherwise covered or wrapped in an occlusive manner unless directed by a physician.
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women on the teratogenic effects of topically applied corticosteroids. Therefore, this cream/ointment should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It should not be used extensively on pregnant patients, in large amounts, or for prolonged periods of time.
It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. Caution should be exercised when topical corticosteroids are administered to a nursing woman.
